Physics of Amorphous Materials by S.R. Elliott
Longman | 1984 | 404 pages | ISBN: 0582446368 | 6.45Mb | Type: Djvu

This book has been written to be an introduction to the science of amorphous materials, a subject which recieves scant mention in conventional solid-state texts. It is aimed at final year undergraduates, beginning graduate students and researchers in solid-state physics or chemistry, materials science or engineering. Some background of (crystalline) solid-state physics is assumed, say between the levels of Kittel’s ‘Introduction to Soild-State Physics’ and Ziman’s ‘Principles of the Theory of SOlids’, because it was felt that in a book of this length such background materials could not easily be incorporated; however, no knowledge of amorphous materials is assumed.

One thing that distinguishes this book from the rest on stat mech is its emphasis on the physical content behind the equations. The author takes great pain to develop and elucidate, at every turn, a coherent physical picture for the edifice of statistical mechanics, in much the same style as the classic book by Tolman. However, if you are learning stat mech/thermo for the first time, you probably will be too busy familiarizing yourself with the equations to be able to appreciate the value of his explanations and motivations, which may just seem pointless rants. So, simply, if you are a newbie, try one of the more mediocre textbooks on stat mech, to learn the subject at a superficial level. Once you’ve mastered the more superficial stuff, you will come around to love this book, assuming that you are a reflective person.

Information technology has changed our society radically. Just as the integrated circuits have been the prime mover for electronics, high-speed transistors and semiconductor lasers based on heterostructures are now playing the same role in modern telecommunications. Professor Kroemer’s conceptual work on heterostructures began in the early 1950s as he was looking for a way to improve transistor speed and performance. In the 1960s, he applied the same principles to the development of lasers and light-emitting diodes, showing that they could achieve continuous operation at room temperature — something thought impossible at that time. His deep fundamental scientific work has had a profound effect on technology and society, transforming and improving our lives.

This volume shows how the analytic properties in the complex energy plane of the Green’s functions of many particle systems account for the physical effects (level, shifts, damping, instabilities) characteristic of interacting systems. It concentrates on general physical principles and, while it does not discuss experiments in detail, includes introductions to topics of current research interest, such as singularities (X-ray, Kondo) associated with transient perturbations in an electron gas, the Mott metal - insulator transition in correlated electron systems, and the phenomenon of high T0 superconductivity.

World Scientific Publishing | 1996 | 216 pages | ISBN: 9810226721 | 8.06Mb | PDF

This book takes the student from the Newtonian mechanics typically taught in the first and the second year to the areas of recent research. The discussion of topics such as invariance, Hamiltonian Jacobi theory, and action-angle variables is especially complete; the last includes a discussion of the Hannay angle, not found in other texts. The final chapter is an introduction to the dynamics of nonlinear nondissipative systems. Connections with other areas of physics which the student is likely to be studying at the same time, such as electromagnetism and quantum mechanics, are made where possible.

Electrons and Phonons: The Theory of Transport Phenomena in Solids (Oxford Classic Texts in the Physical Sciences) by J. M. Ziman
Oxford University Press | 2001 | 576 pages | ISBN: 0198507798 | 14.2Mb | Type: Djvu

This study of the theory of electrical and thermal conduction in metals, semiconductors, and insulators is written at a level appropriate to graduate students and research workers and assumes some knowledge of wave mechanics in its reader. The basic ideas of crystal lattice dynamics, electron zone structure, and transport theory are developed from first principles, and formulae for the macroscopic coefficients are deduced by self-contained mathematical arguments. Interpretation in terms of electronic structure, chemical purity, crystal structure, and crystal perfection is emphasized as a tool for further investigation but detailed discussion of individual means or alloys is avoided.

Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions (CBMS-NSF Regional Conference Series in Applied Mathematics) by Richard Askey
Society for Industrial Mathematics | 1987 | 118 pages | ISBN: 0898710189 | 1.08Mb | Type: Djvu

Originally presented as lectures, the theme of this volume is that one studies orthogonal polynomials and special functions not for their own sake, but to be able to use them to solve problems. The author presents problems suggested by the isometric embedding of projective spaces in other projective spaces, by the desire to construct large classes of univalent functions, by applications to quadrature problems, and theorems on the location of zeros of trigonometric polynomials. There are also applications to combinatorial problems, statistics, and physical problems.

Springer | 1st Edition | 2003 | 249 pages | ISBN: 3540403752 | 6.06Mb | Type: PDF

The set of lectures from the Summer School held in Leuven in 2002 provide an up-to-date account of recent developments in orthogonal polynomials and special functions, in particular for algorithms for computer algebra packages, 3nj-symbols in representation theory of Lie groups, enumeration, multivariable special functions and Dunkl operators, asymptotics via the Riemann-Hilbert method, exponential asymptotics and the Stokes phenomenon. The volume aims at graduate students and post-docs working in the field of orthogonal polynomials and special functions, and in related fields interacting with orthogonal polynomials, such as combinatorics, computer algebra, asymptotics, representation theory, harmonic analysis, differential equations, physics. The lectures are self-contained requiring only a basic knowledge of analysis and algebra, and each includes many exercises.

Springer-Verlag Telos | 1994 | 232 pages | ISBN: 0387580190 | 10.7 Mb | Type: PDF

When starting work on luminescent materials, everyone is faced with the lack of introductory books. Two renowned researchers introduce the reader to luminescence and its applications. They describe the principles of the luminescence processes in a simple, but clear way and deal not only with physics, but also with the chemistry of systems. Particular attention is paid to materials such as lamp phosphors, cathode-ray and X-ray phosphors, scintillators and many other applications. The book is aimed at the researcher beginning work in this field and it provides a solid basis for further research.

Electrical Engineering/Electromagnetics Field Computation by Moment Methods A volume in the IEEE/OUP Series on Electromagnetic Wave Theory Donald G. Dudley, Series Editor An IEEE reprinting of this classic 1968 edition, Field Computation by Moment Methods is the first book to explore the computation of electromagnetic fields by the method of moments—the most popular method to date for the numerical solution of electromagnetic field problems. It presents a unified approach to moment methods by employing the concepts of linear spaces and functional analysis. Written especially for those who have a minimal amount of experience in electromagnetic theory, theoretical and mathematical concepts are illustrated by examples that prepare readers with the skills they need to apply the method of moments to new, engineering-related problems.
